how to leave mail on server on ios 18.1.1 iPhone 16

Ever since IOS 18 (and maybe earlier) whenever I read an email on my iPhone it gets deleted on the server. That is NOT what I want - and it used to be an option but I cannot find it now - and it changed from previous IOS releases.

To re-state in other words: The mail app on my iPHone 16 now deletes any email that I read on my phone - and it didn't use to do that. I'm using iMap.

Ideas?

Problem resolved!

I uninstalled mail on the iPhone, reinstaled and voila! All emails work as they should. Looks like the Bill Gates fix works in the Apple ecosystem as well as in WIndows. Something doesn't work right, shutdown, restart.

Thanks for helping, Charles; sorry to waste your time. We can close this thread.

Give it a try. You will need the incoming server host name, user name and out going mail server name and maybe the server port number. All from your provider. And maybe a one time application password (like AOL has). If this info is not easy to come by, consider calling Apple 800-275-2273 and explain situation. Not sure how you receive email should make a difference, but then what is happening should not. And if you are near an Apple store, or even Best Buy, they might be helpful. I wonder if there's some new AI feature involved. "Hey Siri, don't delete my emails?"

Don't remove your iMAP account, just go to the account and switch off next to the MAIL icon. Then add the POP account (name clearly different from iMAP) and make active by switching on "Account" at the very top of the screen and then DONE. Then keep both and decide which is best for you. The POP file screen below is the only place I have ever seen a choice to keep on server.

My iPhone 12pro has the same iOS18.1.1 and is not deleting from the server nor from the inbox after viewing. I leave in the inbox and when at my desktop, they are moved or deleted and then disappear from the iPhone. And the server. There is no way I have explored that auto deletes from the server or the inbox after viewing, and auto deleting from the server can only happen in the POP mode which is not your situation and it would still remain in the inbox.

This may be far fetched, but when viewing the email, the trash icon is on the bottom far left. Is it possible your hand and the way you normally hold the iPhone, in some way touches that icon and your lost inbox emails have landed in trash?

No, that's not what's happening and I'm not intentionally or accidentally deleting the email on the iPhone. What do you think of the idea of switching to POP on the iPhone. The way I use email, I never want to synch emails on my iPhone or iPad with the Mail app on my Mac. I want to delete or move emails on the Mac always.

Let me review the scenario as it is now to make sure we're on the same page (and thanks, Charles, for working with me). It frustrates me to ask for help since I've been a computer professional since 1961 and a programmer since 1976 :)

  1. An email arrives in my Mac Mail inbox on my Mac, my iPhone and my iPad.
  2. If I click on the email to open it and see the contents on my iPhone.
  3. Instantly it vanishes from the inbox on both the Mac and the iPad. Just the act of opening it makes that happen.

That does sound like iMap behavior but I'm sure(?) that on an earlier IOS there was a button to say "leave mail on the server". I can't find that option on the iPhone now.

And I think the only variable between when it worked and now is the upgrade to IOS 18..
