Transferring old iTunes .itl files to new iMac

I've transferred old iTunes files from an older iMac to a thumb drive, both the .itl file and the .xml file. Then from the thumb drive I accessed them on my new iMac. In Music I selected Import and highlighted the .itl file. In Recently Added I found an album to play but instead got the message "The song “Track 07” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?". The same thing happened when I highlighted the .xml file. What went wrong?
