Deleting Apple Cash payment method

You cannot remove your only payment method. Please add a different payment method before removing Apple Cash

To the contrary, you can remove your only payment payment method as long as you do not have a subscription or owe Apple money. In 20+ years I have never ever had a payment method on my account and I can download free apps, and update the ones I do have.
