Child Account on Their Own iPad

Hi team, I have a question that I am a bit stumped by. I have an old-ish iPad that I was going to let my kids use. I have created a child account for the older one under the Settings > Family. Now is where I need your advice.

I would like for the iPad to have their own stuff and apps. I want to kill the connection to my email and iMessage. I would like to be able to send them an iMessage that belongs to them on their child account, but the settings tab is limited when I log in with their credentials. How can I achieve their independent device, but maintain the user access limitations?

I have been trying to do this for my child, as well.

The iPad in question is a first-gen mini, and I've discovered that the latest iOS it's capable of running is 9.3.5 with 12.7G max storage 😅.

After all of that, I don't think it can do what we hoped. I erased and set it up as a new machine and tried logging in with my child's 'child account.' However, I ran into an issue because there are no 'trusted devices' attached to his child account to validate the user/machine.

So next I signed back into mine, but I couldn't figure out how to switch accounts once I was signed in, as some online instructions indicate are possible. I did a bunch of further troubleshooting, but ultimately, I think it's a no-go.

I have one other older iPad that is a bit newer but can only go up to iOS16, which is better, but we'll see.

I'd love to hear if you are able to figure it out, how, and which device you're working with.

Thanks!
