New iPhone 16 pro side button blanks screen like I want but always locks phone. I’d like it to just blank screen/ display without locking phone.
A quick press does as described and a long press initiates Siri, goes to “classic voice control”, or nothing at all (“off”) per accessibility side button settings I’ve tried.

What is happening is what is expected. The side button sleeps the display, and locks the iPhone.

Various functions enabled on iPhone may or will block access to longer times before locking.
Enabling Face ID avoids having to re-enter the passcode quite as often too, which makes using longer and more secure passcodes and passwords somewhat easier to deal with.
