Sequoia / Synology - Mounting Shares Issues

Hi,

MacStudio on Sequoia 15.1.1 connected via network to Synology DS920+. I have multiple shares on the Synology. For purposes of this question, I'll limit to these two:

1) smb://NAS1/Time Machine

2) smb://NAS1/NetBackup

The Time Machine share is configured on the Synology as a "Time Machine" share which has certain properties. I also have a user account USR1 with admin authority on that NAS that has access to only this share and has a limited quota of 400 GB. The intention here is that the USR1 will be used for time machine backups by MacStudio1, Time Machine will not see the other shares, and will not use more than 400 GB of space on the NAS for time machine backups.

The NetBackup share has a number of things in it, but for simplicity I'll mention my Music library is there and another directory use as a pass through buffer to share data between this and other systems. There is a user account USR2 that has access to only this share.

Using Finder> Go> Connect to Server, I mounted the two shares with hte addresses:

smb://USR1@NAS1/Time Machine

smb://USR2@NAS1/NetBackup

The problem I have is that if I open finder and look at Locations, I have:

MacStudio1:

Machintosh HD

NetBackup. (shows mounted)

Network

Time Machine (shows mounted)

If I look in NetBackup or Time Machine, it shows directoreis, but doesn't show who I'm connected as (e.g. USR1 or USR2).

If I look in Network, it shows NAS1, and if I look in that it shows Connection Failed. (connect as...).

In Finder> Settings>

General> I have External disks and Connected Servers checked.

SideBar> I have MacStudio1, Hard disks, external disks, Bonjour computers, and Connected Servers checked under locations.

How do I get the shares to show in the Finder navigation and have tht location show me what user ID was used to do the mount?

On getting the quota established on the backup share:

  • Got old Time Machine share copied to another share so can access old backups if needed.
  • Tried to get Time Machine to deleted versions on the original share by reducing the quota and invoking a backup. It wouldn't start because no space. I subsequently got to some Time Machine window that allowed me to set a quota but retrying that with a 400 GB quota also did not start. Did not try increasing the quota on the NAS so it would start and leaving the 400 GB quota I set in Time Machine.
  • Tried to see if I could manually delete versions in current backup share. Online information says that you can delete versions by (1) using the settings tool on the FInder window to delete a selected version - but there is no settings icon on the Finder title bar and no settings icon in the customize tool bar. or (2) pressing the Delete key - but this has not effect.
  • In the end, I deleted the original share on the NAS and created it so that it was empty. (There were things in the old share that could not be deleted from the NAS GUI.

End result is I could backup to the new share and Time Machine is now seeing the quota assigned to the share as the available space (before the first backup). Backups working fine now.

Back to the User ID issue that I started this thread with:

  • I ended up creating a user ID USR3 on the NAS that had access to both of the shares that I wanted the Mac to see (NetBackup and Time Machine).
  • Removed system NAS keys from keychain. Dismounted NAS shares in Finder. Rebooted.
  • Used FInder> Go> Go to Server... > to connect to smb://USR3@NAS1/Time Machine and

smb://USR3@NAS1/Netbackup.

  • Finder now shows locations as expected
    • Mac Studio location shows MacintoshHD, Netbackup Network, Time Machine
    • Network location shows NAS1 with Mounted
    • NAS1 location shows connected as USR3 and all shares shown, but only Time Machine and NetBackup mounted. Didn't try, but probably should get an error trying to access any other shares.

So Sequoia seems OK with mounting two shares on the same server with a single user ID. This seems consistent that the keys in the key chain are labeled "NAS1" rather than "NAS1/Share" which I think means there is only one key that is going to be found for a given server on this system.

The one quirk I see so far is that in the Key Chains, there is a network key for NAS1 with USR3 in the login key chain, but there is no time machine key for NAS1 in the system key chain. My guess is that Time Machine backups will work as long as I stay logged in, but not if I log out. Since the system is signal user, this probably seems OK, but it is different than it was. As before, I had to use Finder to mount the Time Machine share to assign the disk in Time Machine. Seems that Finder created a login network password when it connected, and Time Machine is using that or it doesn't need to authenticate with the NAS because the disk is already mounted. Anyway, although I could try some more tests to assess if the key is working, I will consider this solved for now until something stops working as expected.

So looks like the Time Machine share dismounted in the last day or so.

When I used "favorites" to mount "USR1@NAS1/Time Machine" I now see in Finder that location NAS1 has both shares under it and NAS1 is connected as USR2. Seems Sequoia doesn't want to leave the two shares mounted with different user IDs?

Trying a different tack to workaround:

  • My Time Machine backups on NAS1 have grown to 696 GB because I was using USR2 to connect to server for a while (no quota on USR2). I'm going to copy the Time Machine backup files to another folder on the NAS1 (temporarily keep history until I feel I can delete), put a 400 GB quite on the Time Machine share file and delete the current files. Now whether I'm connected with USR1 or USR2, the shared folder is limited to 400 GB.
  • May need to eventually just use USR2 to connect to both shares if can't get Sequoia to leave them in place. I started having the USR1 mount issue on Ventura, and that's when I started using USR2 for Time Machine which led to the quota issue.
  • Will regroup on the share mount issue after I've fixed the quota issue.

Mac dropped connection to Time Machine share again after I was away from computer for long enough for screen lock. Time Machine backups didn't run.

Went back and deleted an old NAS1_...local key from system key chain and a NAS1 time machine-key showed up with the USR3 (correct) in the system key chain while trying to get Time Machine to run.

In Finder>Go>Go To Server, removed favorites for

smb://USR3@NAS1/Time Machine and smb://USR@NAS1/Netbackup.

Connected to

smb://USR3@NAS1

and it asked what shares I wanted online. Picked the two I wanted and they mounted.

In poking around in finder locations, selecting NAS1 location, seemed to again cause the Time Machine share to drop off. Used Go to server to again mount both, see they are both under MacStudio1 location.

Saved smb://USR3@NAS1 to favorities in Go to Server.

Got Time Machine to backup with Backup Now. Will see if it backups up automatically after goes to sleep again.

It's probably tedious reading about my attempts to get this to work, but I'm not getting any responses from the community, and perhaps some of the above may be useful to someone else. I'd say nominally, it's moving in a forward direction, but have not confirmed I'm at the end yet.
