Mac to Mac migration assist, wheel continues while each device discovers the other

so using migration assist I am trying to migrate the data on my new Mac, both connected on the same wifi network. However once I select migrate option on Mac, the wheel keeps spinning and it says discovering as …

is this normal, does it take time in this state?

WiFi isn’t really suitable for migrating your apps and data, it is just way too slow. If your two computers are both very new using target disk mode is a good solution assuming you have the necessary cables. See this Apple knowledgebase article: Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode - Apple Support My preferred method and the one I strongly suggest however is using your TimeMachine backup. If you don’t have one, you should. TimeMachine is Apple’s built in backup system and is really a set-it and forget-it solution. I’ve been using my TM backup to migrate for more than 15 years.
