who is notifying me?

OK, this is annoying. I get occasional notification sounds (beep!) on my iPhone SE (18.1.1) and I don't know who is notifying me. No banners or badges. In my notification presets, I have precisely ONE app that is set to notify me with just sounds, which is Gmail, but when I get one of these notification sounds, I don't have any new Gmails. So how do I establish who notified me with a sound? Is there some log somewhere of notifications sent by apps?

Oh, I swipe down on my lock screen, and no notifications are displayed when this happens.

Alarms, arriving calendar events that have alerts enabled, start charging, medical devices detected, multiplayer games to indicate your turn, and any other apps that want to let you know of a change in status. Many of these will not have a displayed notification.

Notifications aren’t the only things that have audible alerts. Incoming text messages, for example, will alert with a sound (which you can choose). So will emails, and many 3rd party apps will send alerts.

There is also an option to beep at the top of each hour. Might this be what you are observing?

No, no text messages either. As I said, no e-mails are landing in any of my boxes. All third party apps that could give notifications are listed and selected in Settings/Notifications. As I said, the only one that has sounds-only is Gmail, and I'm not getting those when I get a sound alert. No, they come at random times, several each day. But the question is, is there a log of notifications I can consult?

As I said, I DO get notifications when I get e-mails. But the issue is that I get them when I don't.

Thanks. I will do that, but I suspect that will just tell me when a Gmail is really arriving, and not what the older alert (that is no longer associated with Gmail) is alerting me about. Now, what else can do alerts that aren't notifications?

Change the sound for gmail so you can distinguish it from other sounds.

There is no log of alert sounds (which are not only notifications).
