I bought a new ipad air (m2) and a magic keyboard, I noticed it says on the back of the keyboard packaging that it is compatible with ipad air gen 1-4. will it work with ipad? Is there a newer version?

Thank you for clarifying your question. Apple states that the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air M2 11" is compatible with these models of iPad:
Pre-existing Magic Keyboard stock, that pre-dates release of iPad Air M2, will obviously not mention this model on the packaging. As such, you shouldn't have reason for concern. That said, of purchased directly from Apple, in most regions/countries you have up to 14-days to unconditionally return an unwanted (undamaged) item for each or refund - even if opened.

What do you mean by the basic iPad? I think my question wasn’t clear, I’m trying to understand if the keyboard is compatible with my iPad Air. The keyboard is still unopened.
I bought them together at the apple store 3 months ago but the lady who helped me wasn’t sure about the keyboards, she almost sold me an iPad Pro keyboard.
