Unless your employer requires one to create a true end-to-end data tunnel between you can their server, then NO.

It depends on what you think VPN actually is.
A VPN is a secure tunnel from the outside to inside a protected network you need to access.
A VPN is not a company that purports to route all of your internet traffic through their server so they can sell off you as a complete entity.
If you were encouraged to look into using a "VPN" out of fear, you might want to consider why they have to resort to fear in order to get you to purchase their product.
using VPN doesn't hurt your Mac or iPhone, just use if you feel necessary.
I've been using VPN on my Mac for 8 years, it works well with all the macOS versions.
Then that's 8 years you've been freely giving someone access to every bit of your internet usage. They can then do whatever they want with that data.
VPNs are not, and never have been any kind of security software.
Commercial VPNs ?
They may not be what one believes they are doing for the computer and what they actually are doing behind the scenes
