my m2 MacBook Air consistently freezing after using Microsoft word for prolonged periods of time. Can I get a new one? or perhaps an upgrade?

I guess it has something to do with Word. Is this issue also occurring when you're using another text editor, like pages that is included with the MacBook ?
If not, you might want to report this issue to Microsoft support to get further assistance
Does this issue only happen when using Microsoft Word? If so, was it always an issue, or just started to happen recently?
Which exact version of Word are you using? Which exact version of macOS is your Mac running? Do you run any type of Anti-Virus, software firewall, or "cleaner" apps on your Mac?
