Access shared album without syncing photos to icloud

I’m using an iPhone 16 pro running 18.0.1. I received a shared library invitation from a family member wanting to share vacation photos with me. Upon clicking that button, I am greeted with a popup in the Apple photos app telling me to turn on iCloud Photos in order to see the album. After going to the settings and turning on “Shared albums” switch in the iCloud Photos menu, I am still unable to join the album. I can’t turn on “sync this iPhone” both because I don’t have enough iCloud storage and because I don’t want to (all of my photos are in Google photos and I don’t plan on buying storage with Apple iCloud as well).

Is there a workaround here or something I’m missing that will allow me to view this album and possibly upload a few photos to it? It seems near sighted to prevent me from using a shared album just because I’m not fully integrated in the Apple ecosystem. Thank you 🙏

You were not offered an old-style Shared Album, you were offered a newfangled Shared Library. Those are very different things and play by very different rules.

As you have learned, you cannot participate in a Shared Library unless you are already using iCloud Photos, which requires enough iCloud Storage for all of the photos and videos on your own device(s).

Shared Albums, on the other hand, do not count against iCloud Storage at all, but they have other limitations on number and size of items stored.

Personally, I use various Shared Albums for sharing vacation and events photos with different groups of friends and family members, saving my one and only Shared Library for longer-term collaboration with my spouse.

If your family member has analyzed the differences and decided that a Shared Library is more appropriate for this project, you'll have to do your own analysis to decide whether the cost is worth the benefit.
