RTT/TTY call issue between iPhone 13 users

Dear Apple Community,

I have now been using/testing Apple's built-in Radio-Telephone, but I noticed a weird thing.

My Sister who has the same iOS version as me, cannot receive my Textphone calls. Instead, she can normally pick up the phone (iPhone 13) and can hear my Teletyping, but cannot respond back. And the other way around, she called me, I picked up the phone and she typed something in but I couldn't respond somehow.

Why is that?

Sincerely,

Luka V.

Hi Luka V.

welcome to the Appole (user=to=user) Community!

Re: "RTT/TTY call issue between iPhone 13 users"

Am no expert in this area, yet your post to the community deserves some response:

If you haven't read and followed Apple support's article (link below) it may provide some helpful tips:

Set up and use RTT and TTY on iPhone - Apple Support

Eg: says:

" ... you can communicate by telephone using Teletype (TTY) or real-time text (RTT)—protocols that transmit text as you type and allow the recipient to read the message right away. RTT is a more advanced protocol that

transmits audio as you type text".

More info. from the article: "RTT and TTY aren’t supported by all carriers or in all countries or regions.

RTT and TTY functionality depends on your carrier and network environment."

Also: "How to: "Type text during an RTT or TTY call

  1. When you accept or start an RTT or TTY call, tap Use RTT, then tap .
  2. Enter your message in the text field.
  3. If you turned on Send Immediately in Settings, your recipient sees each character as you type. Otherwise, tap to send the message.
  4. To also transmit audio, tap in the top-right corner."

If you already know and make use of the above, and still need help:

Wondering if both the iPhones in use have the newest iOS version installed, or if it may help if they do.

Eg: About iOS 18 Updates - Apple Support says: iOS 18.1.1 is the newest version and

"This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users".

NB: If you want to update, it is wise to first back-up the iPhone.

Thank you kindly for posting the video, explaining your experience in trying to use RTT on iPhone. Sorry I do not have a solution to offer. Perhaps others who see your video may be able to suggest something. (BTW: with volume up I understood your voice, and the captions were a welcome addition.)

It is often those who depend upon, and use frequently an accessibility feature, who can contribute most to troubleshooting, or improving that feature.

If you wish, you could send feedback to Apple's accessibility team.

Dear User, thank you for your response.

I have now tried it out with different iPhones but there is the same outcome: When I call someone with Textphone (RTT) the one picking up cannot respond back, and vice versa.

Moreover, there seems to be an infrequent noise coming from the background, I will send a video later on.

After E-Mailing my Carrier, it seems to be a bit more clear now. I will change my carrier. I don't have a hearing problem or anything, I just found it cool but if those people don't support necessary functions, I will have to change.

Sehr geehrtes Spusu Office,

Ich benutze seit kurzem auf meinem iPhone 11 die Funktion “Real-Time-Text” bzw. die Fernschreiber Funktion.

Da auf der offiziellen Apple Support Webseite Answer or make RTT or TTY calls from your iPhone – Apple Support (UK) "Depending on your network provider, you may see RTT, TTY or RTT/TTY.” Steht, wollte ich fragen ob diese Funktion von Ihnen offiziell unterstützt wird und ob zusätzliche Kosten verrechnet werden und wie es mit dem Wi-Fi Calling steht.

Ich verwende nur die Software Version unter Settings -> Accessibility -> Textphone -> (Die SIM).

Danke.
Hochachtungsvoll,
Luka Vujasin

Sehr geehrter Herr Vujasin,

wir möchten Sie darüber informieren, dass diese Funktion aktuell von uns nicht unterstützt wird.

Bei offenen Fragen kommen Sie gerne auf unser spusu Service-Team zu.

Thank you kindly for your thoughtful reply, Luka V. Grateful you have shared how you will work towards a solution through looking for a carrier who supports RTT/TTY. Some countries may not have carriers who support RTT/TTY. (Seems USA and Canada were early supporters of this technology.) Sharing your experience here may help others who look for answers.

So now after doing a lot of retakes and filming with my iPad 8, you'll see the issue. I recommend turning captions on that I have created (sadly) extra for this video, because you will not understand a thing spoken in this video.

https://youtu.be/H2PlzGihfKY (Watch at 0:40 for some seconds and then the more "unnatural" sounds as I call them start at 01:03)

Hope it helps! By the way, this video will be online till the 13th of December.
