Can't delete a duplicate user file

I have created a monster & don't know how to kill it. I updated my 2020 Mac Mini (Apple Si) to Sequoia and restored my user profile data from Time Machine and somehow in the process created a 2nd identical user file. I moved the duplicate User File to the trash and tried to delete it but I can't because it says it's "in use" nor can I "put back", that option is greyed-out. I tried logging out of my profile and setting up a guest Administrator User but when I log in using that, the trash can is empty. When I log back in using my User Profile, the file is still in the trash. My Mac seems to be working fine but I'm stuck with a file in my trash I can do nothing with. I sure could use some help if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Ok, here are a few things you can try:

  • Simply restart your Mac.

  • Reboot your Mac into Safe Mode. Try deleting the file again.

  • Quit Any Background Processes That May Be Using the File
    • Open Activity Monitor
    • Look for any processes related to the user file or any apps that might be holding on to it.
    • Select the process and click the "X" button at the top left to quit it.
    • Try emptying the Trash again.

  • Use Terminal to Force Delete the File
    • Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities).
    • Type the following command but do not hit Enter yet: sudo rm -rf
    • Drag the file from the Trash into the Terminal window. This will paste its full file path into the command.
    • Double-check that the file path is correct (be very careful with the rm -rf command as it deletes without confirmation).
    • Press Enter and enter your admin password if prompted.
