Photos resized in iOS 18

Why did my photos resize (shrink) when I uploaded to iOS 18.1.1 (& iPadOS 18.1.1 on my iPad)?

Are you saying that your in Full Screen your pictures don't fill the screen both directions? Like my example filled the screen on the short dimension (vertical for my picture) but didn't fill the long dimension (horizontal for mine?)

My picture was made on a Nikon. Are you talking about picture made with your phone's camera? What aspect ratio have you chosen with your camera when you take a picture? The native aspect ratio of the sensor is 4:3-- that's true of pretty much all sensors, including my Nikon. 4:3 is the same as 16:12

But I cropped my Gorilla picture to 16:9, since that's the aspect ratio of my TV and of the computer monitor I sometimes use. That means I cut off the top and bottom to change 16:12 to 16:9 so it would expand to the width of the screen.

If you set the aspect ratio on your camera to 16:9, then it will fill more of the screen. For me, I don't have my camera cut the top and bottom off-- I take my pictures 4:3 and then do the cropping myself.

The iPhone screen is 19.5 : 9, so it's way wider, and so there are always borders on the long side, unless you zoom in and cut more off the top and bottom.

That does not help me.

I can’t post pics (I keep getting an error message that its too large)

That being said, if I tap on a pic I get something similar to

your “edit mode”.  If I tap on that I get

the pic slightly larger with a black rim similar to your “fill the screen”.

However, I had NEVER gotten the white of black borders prior

to upgrading to 18.1.1 & it COMPLETELY filled the ENTIRE screen without any

borders.

I am talking about all my pics, vertical & horizontal.

I do not have any pics on my phone from any other [external] devices - only my iPhone & iPad, be it pics of screenshots.

Other than the screen size (whereas the iPhone is smaller than the iPad), everything always filled the screen….even if I took a pic on my phone it [still] didn’t have a border on the iPad but now it does.

If I take a vertical  screenshot on my iPhone I can view the pic/screenshot in full screen on the phone but the

same “full screen” pic/screenshot has a black border on the left & right sides on the iPad.

If I take a horizontal pic on my iPhone I can view the pic in full screen on the iPad but the same pic has a black border on the iPhone.

While I am not sure of what you are saying in your posts (“Landscape” is the photography term for a photo that is wider and has always been used for video and photos of landscapes. “Portrait” has always been tall photos such as a “portrait” of a person).

That being said, I have found that this post of yours to be a perfect example of what I am fed up with in the photos app in iOS 18.2. I take 99% of my iPhone photos in 16:9 because they are of landscapes, scenery. And when I used to tap on the Landscape video or photos app, it would fill the screen like the first photo. Now all videos and photos look like the second photo you posted. You can’s even watch a video in full screen and fast forward it without it being in this ridiculous tiny view. So frustrating. Apple needs to fix this.

I see you are replying to Richard.Taylor but I'm going to remake my point.

First of all, I am well aware of what “portrait” & “landscape” means.  That is completely irrelevant to the point of my post(s).

The point I have been trying to make is prior to iOS 18 I have not had to tap on a pic to make it full screen - regardless of it was on my iPhone on iPad or if I view the pic on the other device then I had actually taken the pic on/from, it would always be full screen.  However, now I am getting a black border on the iPhone regardless of it its portrait or landscape as well as a black border if I view a screenshot on the iPad I had taken on/from the iPhone.
