My iPhone won't sync with my iMac

My iPhone automatically updated iOS to 18.1.1 yesterday. Every evening I connect my iPhone to my 27" iMac running Sonoma 14.6.1. Last night I connected the phone and it started to charge. I did get a message on the iMac saying a new app had to be installed to communicate with this iPhone. So, I installed that. However,I did not get the "Trust this computer" message on the phone so couldn't put in my pin. When I looked in Finder the iPhone showed in the sidebar, but when I opened the phone device there was no information displayed, no back up, no sync nothing.

So, it would seem that the iMac is recognising that there is an iPhone connected but isn't communicating with it.

I've resolved my issue with the iPhone not backing up. Even tho I had automatic update set for the operating system the iMac hadn't updated to the latest Sequoia version. After manually updating to Sequoia the iMac recognised the phone and allowed back up. It still comes up with a message that it couldn't sync contacts but at least I've got the back ups done!!

This is unusual.

To improve my understanding of the phenomenon, it would be highly beneficial if you could share a full screenshot (Do not crop it). Visual representations carry a greater impact than written descriptions.

Please remember that this is a public forum, so when attaching a screenshot, please avoid including any personal credentials such as IP addresses, card details, email IDs, Apple IDs, IMEI numbers, serial numbers, phone numbers, order IDs, or any identifiable location information if you are sharing a map.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

My father is experiencing this issue as well. He has an iPhone running iOS 18.1.1 and a new Mac running the latest version of Sonoma. When he tried to connect the iPhone to the Mac with a lightning to USB-C cable, he was prompted to install software. He told me this over the phone, so I cannot supply a screenshot or further details, but he was also prompted to install an app after connecting the cable.

I find it difficult to believe additional software would need to be installed on-demand for two Apple products running the latest operating system software to communicate with each other.
