A 13" M2 MacBook Air has a 13.6" display with 2560x1664 pixels, for a pixel density of 224 pixels per inch.

A 15" M2 MacBook Air has a 15.3" display with 2880x1864 pixels, for a pixel density of 224 pixels per inch.

You didn't say how large your monitor is, but the most likely possibilities are 24" and 27".

A 24" 1920x1080 monitor has about 91.8 PPI.

A 27" 1920x1080 monitor has about 81.6 PPI.

Which means that one of these is no match for the Retina display built into your M2 MacBook Air. For a given physical area, there simply aren't as many pixels available to draw text shapes accurately, or to fill in photo areas in fine detail.

In the old days, macOS used to try to make text on such non-Retina screens look a little better using a clever hack called sub-pixel anti-aliasing. To the best of my knowledge, no recent versions of macOS support it, and thus the quality of text on monitors with low/standard pixel density has probably gotten a bit worse than it used to be.

That said, the main problem is simply that your monitor's resolution is not nearly as good as the resolution of the built-in screen of your M2 MacBook Air.
