NFC failure with IOS 16.7.10

I have been using iPhone to monitor blood glucose with Freestyle 2. Worked fine until Apple installed IOS 16.7.10. Hasn’t worked since. Gone through complete delete and reinstall with Abbott/Freestyle with no success.

I have been told by tech at Freestyle, that Apple has blocked NFC in their latest IOS to force people to buy a new iPhone. I don’t know if this is true, but a Google search reveals a LOT of people dealing with the very same problem after an IOS upgrade.

How do I get NFC working again, other than just buying a new cell phone?

I to have had this problem with my iPhone 8+ which has always supported contactless pay through the NFC chip. After upgrading to iOS 16 (current version is 16.7.10 - but the problem started after the previous update) my contactless payment stopped working.

The Apple Wallet is all good, Afterpay and their digital card is fine, both my credit and debit cards are installed and i can access them through the wallet and choose them as a payment method at the till, but when i hold my phone over the card reader - when directed by the Wallet - no connection is made.

I went so far as to take the phone into an authorised Apple repairer to see if the NFC chip or antenna were damaged but both were fine and working properly. It was then that i was told by the tech that it was possible that the iOS was the problem and that it is known that Apple stop supporting things like this, despite the phone hardware still working, without telling you in the updates.

I refuse to buy a new iPhone when the one i have does everything else that i need.

Come on Apple!!! Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone - especially not at that prices that they are now. Why would you disable something that worked perfectly well?

You have lost me as an Apple customer after 14 years. While i don’t upgrade my phone that often I have always had an Apple iPad and laptop as well - i won’t be replacing them with Apple again.

FYI I was able to go out and buy a brand new Oppo for a tenth of the price of a new iPhone which does everything i need, including contactless payments. If i have to replace this phone every 2 years I will have 10 new phones during that time for the price of one of your new ones.

Sad one, Apple as i have been a loyal customer for over a decade.
