Which bright developer disabled file system search in Spotlight so profoundly that the finder won't work either?

Just upgraded to OS 18.1.1 Filename search does not work in the Finder. DUH? Does Apple have any test suite at all? How could this be broken? Too much inept AI?

Evidence below:

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.1

Saw this yesterday searching for mbox mail folders, but was to late to check with find command

% find / -name Diary8

Also just noticed the screenshot shows searching ONLY the Diary folder in the search criteria, not the entire system. Click on “This Mac” and run again to see if it shows up.

The conventional view is that, mods apart, Apple don't monitor these discussion boards and if you want them to hear about bugs then you need to use the feedback website, albeit with low expectations in my experience. If I were running the team responsible for Spotlight then I'd like to think that I'd have a running search on these boards to look out for issues with the product - but that's me, and I don't work for Apple.

I use easyfind. It's not as quick as Spotlight because it's not based on an index, but if you really need to find something then it's really good and will including system and hidden files (I'm not affiliated).

A second reply to this. Does Apple bother to monitor these streams? No-one who is not employed by Apple need respond to this, because this is a system bug, pure and simple. With exceptions of which this is not one, what worked in OSX through OS17 ought to work in OS18.

Of course I could go to the terminal and type:

% open $(find ~ -name Diary8.odt)

but this requires me to find a terminal window and type the full name of the file as well as the command itself, instead of what worked yesterday before my alleged system "upgrade," which was Command-Space "diar" which populated the Spotlight window which then found the file and opened it.

These threads are monitored by the Hosts to make sure everyone sticks to the terms of use. The Hosts do not have the time (or the remit) to monitor for feedback or issues. This is not "conventional wisdom;" it's a fact.

Apple also doesn't respond here except in cases of health or safety and then only to direct people to the proper channels.

There are times when, if there is already a known issue, a specific team will look through the forum posts to find examples. They may even reach out to individuals for more information. I've had that happen. I ended up on a conference call with a number of folks from Apple.

If you want Apple to know your concerns, you need to use one of the proper channels. You can contact Apple support. All issues are logged. You can also use the feedback page:

Product Feedback - Apple

Unless Apple wants or needs more information, they will not respond to your feedback. However, it's logged and sent to the correct people. There are numerous examples of feedback resulting in features changes. For actual bugs, I'd bet Apple is well aware of them and is working on them. What we will never know is what the priority of a particular bug is. The more people who report it to Apple, though, the more likely Apple is to give it more attention. So yes, feedback matters.
