Screenshot app - lost functionality

My mac’s built-in Screenshot app has suddenly lost functionality for taking screenshots of a portion of the screen. The small grey menu of screenshot tools still appears, and all functions are working with the exception of the “Capture Selection Portion”. The highlighted area that normally appeared on the screen no longer appears. The app seems to be corrupted. Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

Never mind. Thanks for trying. I found my rectangle again. I had sized it too small to be seen. Here it is again in all it's glory.

⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+5 opens Mac’s built-in Screenshot app. A small gray menu of screenshot tools will appear. Clicking on these tools takes screenshots of A.)the entire screen, B.)a portion of the screen, or C.) individual windows Every tool works for me except the one that is supposed to select a portion of the screen. I used to be able to drag the borders of the rectangle to select the area I want. NOW there is NO RECTANGLE! The app does not respond when I click on this tool. The app has lost the ability to display the rectangle.
