iPhone Battery Life
For an iPhone 12 (or really any iPhone battery), I’m wondering what the best advice for optimal battery life is going forward. My next step is to either:
- replace my battery
- buy a new device
In general, is it best to charge a phone to 100% each time then allow it to drain to zero - then repeat?
I assume that my habits put a strain on a battery because I leave my screen on all of the time. I don’t like it to time out when I’m using it. That & often I’ll leave it plugged in for an extended amount of time - often while using it.
Considering the loose estimates of a phone using 1% battery life per year or to expect to replace the battery every 2 years - then I’m doing fine & it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference how the battery is used, it would seem.
If anyone else has approximately the same amount of overall battery life left as I do (76%) but they charged their device very differently, that would show me that it really doesn’t matter a whole lot.
I’ve only recently started noticing the battery. About 6 mos ago I noticed it was at 79% which in settings it says that it’s time to replace it. I’ve watched it regularly since then & it has stayed at 79% - until the last time I checked.
One person said that charging a phone & leaving it on standby will ruin it bc they’ve done that. The post didn’t allow responses but I wanted to ask exactly what they meant by leaving it on standby. Do you mean charging it fully but not unplugging it right away?
About a month ago my phone quit charging. I only had one iPhone setup for charging so I had no way to switch out the base or cord bc they came with the iPhone & were proprietary. The cord from the phone went to a class C to the base. I purchased what was available & cheapest at HEB so I ended up getting the iPhone connector to USB bc I have a ton of USB bases. Thankfully, it worked. I threw the other away.
Yesterday it wouldn’t charge again. I’ve seen it do that a couple of times but by switching bases or even turning the plug around (bc it goes both ways), it seems to do the trick. Well nothing I did last night worked. It was at 3% when I went to sleep. I feel like when it hit zero, it began charging but I have no idea. It was at 100% this morning (100% of 76%). It’s draining fast, though. In an hour it’s at 84%. And, it still shows it’ll charge so I’m thinking whatever happened last night was a glitch - & possibly whatever happened last time now seeing what it did…
Considering that I need both front & back glass & a new battery, I’d LIKE to get a new iPhone. I just don’t think I can afford it ATM. It’s not too cheap even to have a battery replaced, though.
My main question is about “best practices” for battery optimization after replacement.
