Unable to update my iPhone 15 to the latest iOS version

I have the iPhone 15 and it’s not getting notifications for iOS updates. It got a badge app icon on Settings for iOS 17.6.1, back in September, but since then there have been about 7 iOS releases and my iPhone got none of them. No badge app icon or lock screen notification…nothing. The only reason I have iOS 18.1.1 was because I went into Settings>General>Software Update and manually checked for an update. If I hadn’t, I’d still have iOS 17.6.1. I plug my phone in before bed every night, it’s connected to WiFi, and I’ve even toggled all 3 switches in Automatic Updates off and back on countless times. Yet my iPhone is just sitting on its rear when there’s an iOS update. This is absurd and I’m infuriated. Why isn’t my iPhone even checking for iOS updates on its own? Any help is appreciated.

Troubleshooting Automatic Updates:

A. Disable all VPNs:

A VPN connection may be blocking messages from Apple servers.

B. Get and Use Push Notifications:

  1. Go Here: If your Apple Devices aren't Getting Apple Push Notifications - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: To use Apple Push Notification Service (APNs), your macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS devices need a persistent connection to Apple's servers over Ethernet, cellular data (if capable), or Wi-Fi.

But you do understand I don’t want to have to check for updates manually, whether it’s through Software Update in Settings or connecting the iPhone to a computer with iTunes. That defeats the whole purpose of having Automatic Updates enabled.

Updates:

Updates would be downloaded. You’ll just be informed that they need to be installed.

  1. Go Here: Update iOS on iPhone - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: When an update is available, iPhone downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’re notified before an update is installed.

Note:

You cannot downgrade to an earlier iOS version. So, back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer prior to the update and after. That way, you can have something to restore it from, should anything go wrong after the update, such as a misconfiguration.

Call and Show this to Apple:

So, if automatic updates are not working as they should, then I recommend getting ahold of Apple Support. Perhaps screenshare your iPhone’s screen while you are on the call, putting it on speakerphone. In doing ask, the Apple Rep can see this from your perspective.

Update Using a Computer and Ethernet:

Start with attempting another update; this time, through use of a computer. If you cannot use Wi-Fi, then use Ethernet.  See my User Tip: Update your iPhone Using a Computer - User Tip.

On the computer, you would connect it through Ethernet, going directly into your router. For a Mac (or PC) that does not have Ethernet, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple. If you get the same error, the model is likely just not compatible.

As I mentioned in my post, I have all 3 switches in General>Software Update>Automatic Updates turned on. Automatically Install “iOS updates” and “Security Responses & System Files” as well as Automatically Download “iOS updates” are all turned on. However iOS still isn’t checking for updates on its own. I’m not getting a notification that an iOS update is available, even months after the update is released. I don’t want to have to go into Settings and check for updates manually. iOS should be doing that automatically if I have auto updates on. So why isn’t it?

"That article you linked to was for network administrators so how does an iPhone user test push notifications?"

Strange. It has become a broken link: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/update-ios-iph3e504502/ios. So, I've reported it to Apple. Good that I took the screenshot --it may change next time it is posted.

Auto-Update:

It will move forward with downloading the update, letting you know that it is set to install; that is the benefit.
