Error message even when it is the correct "verification code" for my Apple ID/Apple Account

When I try to sign into my other Apple ID account/Apple account, I am asked to enter the "verification code" sent to my phone. I do that. I get this error message "You have entered an incorrect verification code too many times. Try again later." even though it is the correct verification code. I have tried over several days and get the same error message. What is going on? I

Well, it is now working. I do not know why. I was having trouble signing into my Apple ID account from my current iPhone. I guess that was related. When I was finally able to do that (using an old iPhone 7 that I haven't charged in a couple of years), then the verification code displayed on my current iPhone produced the desired response. I was able to sign into my Apple account via Safari. No "incorrect verification code".
