Message address is red

When I send a group text, one of the addresses is red. He does not receive the text. When I send it to only that person, it is green. Then he receives the text. What does this mean? I have iPhone 16 pro.

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

This has come up before, but with no clear solution that I'm aware of. A couple of possibilities to consider:

First up, what kind of phone does this individual have?

Group messages are a feature of MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), which is, itself, an extension to SMS (Short Message Service). SMS is limited to text-only, while MMS (as its name implies) supports richer media options (photos, videos, group chat, etc.)

Apple built their Messages platform to supersede MMS, while Android/Google built RCS.

If the individual has an old phone, it may not support MMS, and is limited to single-threaded text messages only, which could explain why a direct message works, but the group message doesn't).

Second, even if their phone does support MMS, there may be carrier limitations, or they may need to explicitly enable MMS.

If neither of those work, try sending to a smaller subset of the group. Some carriers (such as AT&T in the US) limit MMS groups to 20 contacts, so if he's the 21st person, that could explain it.

Also check whether they see other members posting to the group. That could also help tie the problem to being on your end (problem sending the message) vs. theirs (problem receiving)
