Getting sound from my new Mac mini m4 from the HDMI port to Sonos Beam 2 soundbar

Hi, just bought a Mac mini m4, and want to use it with a Sonos Beam 2. When using airplay I get a lag when watching movies. If I try to connect with a cable to the HDMI port om my Beam 2, I dont get the choice to use HDMI out as sound on the Mac mini. Anyone else having the same problem? Does anyone know if it is possible to get only sound out from the HDMI on the new Mac mini... Is there a workaround anyone knows about, or how to remove the lag with airplay?

Mac mini, macOS 15.1

Dunno for sure, øyvind1973… all i could find was this discussion on the sonos forums… https://en.community.sonos.com/home-theater-229129/how-to-connect-a-sonos-arc-with-mac-mini-and-tv-as-monitor-6850369…,

granted you have a Mac Mini M4 and the Mac Mini mentioned in the Sonos post isn’t an M4 ..

and this again in the Sonos forums… mentions lip synch delay.. https://en.community.sonos.com/home-theater-228993/sonos-beam-gen2-optical-or-arc-hdmi-questions-6896933… it mentions a Sonos App… i’m guessing/hoping that’s for iPhone ? Also check for any firmware updates for your Sonos Beam 2… sonos will sell you an optical audio adapter for $35… it’s designed for the Beam ( maybe it’ll work with the Beam 2? ) what’s the difference between the Beam and Beam 2 ? Can’t say… will accessories for the Beam work with the Beam 2 ? Maybe yes, maybe no.. you could see if there’s an HDMI 2.0 pass thru audio extractor… anyways, to conclude, the Sonos Beam( and Beam 2) and your TV support HDMI eARC , your mac mini m4 does not…

well, i tried… i went down this rabbit hole as far as i could… only to find a note that read “Sorry, Gone on Vacation to a warmer country” dated 2 months ago and signed “A.Rabbit”

So, please call Sonos and see if they can assist. I don't think it will work though as the Sonos was NEVER intended to be a speaker for a computer. You can Airplay through it so there really isn't any reason to directly connect it to the computer when Airplay is already there. I do that all the time with several of my Sonos speakers, ranging from the :

  • Sonos One (2nd Gen)
  • Sonos Move (1st Gen)
  • Sonos Roam (1st Gen)

My Sonos Beam 2 is directly connected to a bedroom TV and I haven't tested it however I'm sure it would work with Airplay.

Additionally, Sonos app will load on a Mac however there is NOTHING on the app that indicates you can play music or other audio when a Sonos speaker is connected to the Mac.

If you are not familiar with Airplay then click AirPlay - Apple and here is a link to a Youtube video that also shows how: Mac to Sonos using AirPlay

Hi, thanks for the answer. I have really gone down the rabbit hole myself, and read everything I was able to find. That includes the signal splitter, that I am gonna try and find. Was hoping someone maybe had found a solution to remove the lag with airplay. But, then again, I have also read that Apple have deliberately added the lag for one reason or another.
