Back Camera and Flashlight Not Working After iOS 18.1.1 Update on iPhone SE 2020

Hi everyone,

After updating my iPhone SE 2020 to iOS 18.1.1, my back camera and flashlight have stopped working completely. Additionally, the front camera occasionally shows a horizontal view instead of the normal vertical orientation.

I’ve tried basic troubleshooting like restarting the phone and resetting settings, but the issue persists. Has anyone else faced similar problems? If so, did you find a solution?

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Seeing lots of "Me Too"s, this seems to be catching on. Question is: “Just how many people have actually reported this to Apple?

Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of your issue, if you to not inform them of it.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this post.
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

So I had this exact same issue, and after seeing your issue, posted my own ticket on this:

Back Camera and Flashlight doesn't work a… - Apple Community

Funny enough, when I got diagnostics done a few months ago, it wasn't an issue, and having just gotten off the phone with Apple for remote diagnostics just a few minutes ago, now the camera sensors are damaged, and with that the flashlight also doesn't work. It's not a user error, or a software issue (according to the representative who ran the diagnostics), but a hardware issue. I just find it peculiar that my hardware was all fine and (100% healthy) before iOS 18, but suddenly needs a physical repair for having the same exact issue other people are clearly having with the same lack of functionality after making the update.

So... long story short, it's a hardware issue, but probably didn't show up on diagnostics until after 18 rolled out? I'm confused by the whole thing, but I can't afford a new phone, and my warrantee is expired (bought through Verizon), so I guess I'll just finish paying off this phone and upgrade or something a few months from now.

Confirmed. Two of my customers did their iPhone update (iOS 18.1.1) last night and called me because their rear camera and flashlight are not working anymore. Before everything worked properly and they have no option to roll back , because older ipsw's are not signed anymore. Tried upgrade to 18.2b3 but camera still is not working. Affected one iPhone XR and an iPhone 14 Pro. Looks like "Houston we have a problem"

Thank you for your input! I understand that not all issues are directly related to an iOS update. However, in this case, my back camera and flashlight were working perfectly fine before updating to iOS 18.1.1. The problem started immediately after the update, and I haven’t dropped or damaged my phone in any way.

I also noticed other users reporting similar issues after updating, which makes me believe it’s likely a software-related bug. Of course, I’m open to exploring other possibilities, but the timing and consistency of the issue strongly suggest a connection to the update.

Thanks again for your perspective! It’s always helpful to hear different thoughts.

Thank you for sharing this! It’s reassuring (though frustrating) to know I’m not the only one experiencing this issue. If it’s affecting multiple models, like the iPhone XR and 14 Pro, it definitely seems like a widespread problem with iOS 18.1.1.

I hope Apple addresses this soon with a proper fix. If you find any workarounds or hear of any updates, please do share. Let’s hope they resolve this quickly—“Houston” really does have a problem!
