Gift Card Promotion When Buying MacBook

Purchased MacBook Air that included a $150 Apple Gift Card as a promotion. This was automatically applied to the invoice cost. Purchase was made through Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI). I am also being charged through ACMI $12.50 per month for the gift card. Bottom line I am paying full price for the MacBook. There was no actual promotional discount. What did I miss?

You end up paying the total price, but you have the $150 Apple Gift Card.

For example, a purchase of $1000 device that offers a $150 Gift Card would be billed as:

  • $850 for the device
  • $150 for the Gift Card

The device cost is reduced by the amount of the Gift Card. It would be $1000 out of pocket, but you have the $150 Gift Card to spend, so once that is spent, then the net amount is the $850.

The reason it is billed that way is if someone returned the device, they would not be able to get $1000 back and also be able to pocket the $150 Gift Card.

There's no other discount on the Mac. Pricing in the education store is already discounted from the regular store. What you see in the Education store is already the lower price. There's no additional discount after that.

The promotion is for a gift card of a certain value with the purchase of a Mac. You still need to pay full price for the Mac.

The price of the Mac is reduced by the amount of the gift card and that amount is then charged for the gift card.

You end up paying only for the total value of the MacBook and get a gift card. You are not paying full price for the Mac + the value of the gift card.

This is done, since Apple cannot force people to return the gift card if they return the Mac. In that case, you only get refunded the portion of the Mac value but not the gift card value.
