Downloading macOS Catalina

I was given a 2012 iMac desktop and I can’t get it to log in. Initially it had a 🚫 sign when turning on. I held command + alt + R to reboot and then I can’t get any further. I tried to install the macOS Catalina update but the untitled file says “this disk doesn’t use the GUID partition table scheme. Change the partition scheme”. But the partition button doesn’t work on that disk file. Can’t figure out what to do by using the Apple website.

From the recovery session fire the application:

Disk Utility

and from this application select the internal physical disk from your iMac

( it should be the top one to appear on the left window of the Disk Utility window )

and format it with the top erase button, and choose a GUID partition scheme, and an APFS file system

( which is appropriate to install Catalina ).
