How do I remove the iPadOS 18.1.1 update from my iPad 7?

I have received an update for installing iPadOS 18.1 on my iPad 7. I read, earlier this year (2024) that the iPad 7 wasn't eligible for iPadOS 18 and now it appears this has changed. Anyway, I DO NOT want this update. How do I remove it? I already turned off updates, but it's still there and says I can install it now or later. I don 't want it installed AT ALL.

If the downloaded update has not yet installed, the update package can be deleted from your iPad:

Settings > General > iPad Storage >

Scroll down the list of installed Apps to find the [as yet not installed] iPadOS 18.1.1 update package - tap the item - then select Delete.

Having deleted the pending update, be aware that you will still see badge-notifications in iPad settings that will notify you of an available update; short of installing the update, these notifications cannot be suppressed.

Be aware that system software updates include security patches and fixes for your iPad - required to mitigate emerging threats and vulnerabilities.

At the time of writing, iPadOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 18.1.1 are both current.

The installed version of iPadOS can be verified from iPad settings:

Settings > General > About

As already outlined, even if you disable automatic download of updates, you will continue to see badge-notifications for available updates in iPad settings; these notifications cannot be suppressed.

If your iPad is running iPadOS 17.x, you really should install the iPadOS 17.7.2 update if available to you. This update includes critical security updates for iPadOS 17 - without committing to iPadOS 18.1.1.

It appears that Apple may have stopping "signing" the iPadOS 17.7.2 update for devices capable of update to iPadOS 18. As such, you only options now are to remain using iPadOS 17.7.1 - or update to iPadOS 18. As such, unless you update your iPad to the most recent version of which your iPad is capable, you will not be able to apply essential security updates.

Do you have any specific reason to avoid updating to iPadOS 18?
