How to sort combined images for my newsletter?

Hello from the UK everybody!

First of all... I am NOT tech savvy - some of the replies to answers I read here are like a foreign language to me, I hope someone can help with my question, but remember you are replying to an 68 year old. I have no IT department to call on as I work from home so everything I do manage to learn is self taught.

I create newsletters that have images and text, it's all food and cooking,

I recently discovered Combine Images in Shortcuts and that multiple images look so much better in the layout of our newsletters as they are one image of maybe 4 or 6 images in one. See example below. They look lovely and come out great for those subscribers viewing on mobile and tablet.

My problem is there is only the choice for sorting the order of the images in Chronological or Reverse Chronological order.

Ideally to have the images following the order they are mentioned in the text is preferable as is moving them to look more aesthetically pleasing if they are not being mentioned individually by their recipe title.

I have tried to work out how I can arrange them in my preferred order by:

numbering the images 1 to 6 before their title on my desktop and then importing to Photos

selecting the images in my preferred order and them importing to Photos

numbering the images in the title when they are already in Photos

creating a separate album, importing the photos from my desktop, moving them to my preferred order

creating a separate album, importing the photos from my desktop, moving them to my preferred order, then changing the titles to numbers

importing them in my preferred order from my desktop to Photos one by one

I have had zero success with all the above, and I wonder if anyone has a solution? Having chronological/reverse as the only choice to order seems a bit random to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

I don't get what shortcut you're using. Does this choose images from an album in Photos or from a folder in Finder?

Since you say that you have "only the choice for sorting the order of the images in Chronological or Reverse Chronological order," it seems unlikely that changing the title or filename would work. It seems like you would need to change the date.

You could make the first one today's date at 12:00 am, then next at 12:01 am, and so on. In Mac Photos you could put the pictures in an album ,and and then change the date with the Photos Menu "Image>Adjust Date and Time…"

This isn't bad for doing 6 pictures, but it would get tedious for more, I think. There are scripts to do lots of pictures at once, but it's not clear where these pictures come from-- the scripts work in Photos.

The date is contained in the "Exif" metadata, so if you want to change the date of files in a Finder folder, there are lots of apps that do that-- search the app store for "Exif." I see something called Photo Date Adjuster (with in-app purchases,) that I have no experience with, but it seems OK. Just don't use apps like this on pictures that are in the Photos Library.

If you want to take a group of photos, manually arrange them and then change their Image Capture Date to the same date but with 1 minute difference between each succeeding photo do the following:

1 - get the photos in an album and export them to a folder on the Desktop.

2 - Import them back into the library (allow duplicates to be imported and into an album you can name "Date Change" or whatever.

3 - manually arrange them in the order you'd like.

4 - select all and run this AppleScript: Batch Change the Date and Time to a Fixed Date. It will date all of the photos selected with the date of the first in line and add 1 minute to each subsequent photo.

5 - test by sorting by Date - newest first.

6 - proceed with your normal workflow.

7 - when completed you can delete the album and it's duplicate photos.

The AppleScript is a user contributed script. It and many more can be found in this other user tip: Thematic Index to Photos for Mac related User Tips.

Addendum: download the script into Script Editor, compile is and save as an application. After you've manually sorted the photos and selected them all double click on the app to change the capture date.

Hi Noreen275

If you want to rearrange photos and combine the images into one, then you can use preview to combine or manipulate images. It is already installed on Mac and has the basic features you will need to combine images.

1: Open finder

2: Click on the folder that contain the photo you want to combine into one image

3: Right-click on the image. Select Get Info and note its width.

4: Right-click on the image. Select Get Info and note its width. You need to do this for all the images, that you want to combine into one.

5: Right click on the first image and choose Duplicate. Double-click on the Duplicated file, because you need to open it in Preview. You need to do this, because you want to preserve the original images and only combine the duplicates.

6: Click on Edit and choose Select All. Another option is shortcut: Command + A

7: Go back to Edit and choose Cut or you can use shortcut: Command + X. Preview will inform or prompt you that your action will convert the image into a PNG file. Hit convert to proceed.

8: Click on Tool > Adjust size and remember to uncheck Scale proportions.

9: Enter sum of the width of the images you want to combine in the Width and click okay.

10: Go to Edit > Paste or use shortcut (to paste the first image, which you cut in step 7)

11: Open the second image in Preview and copy it, then you go back to the first image in Preview and use shortcut: Command + V. And you need to repeat this until you have all the images you want to combine into a single image

12: When you are finished rearranging the images, you click on File > Save or shortcut: Command + S. Once saven, you can choose to use a PGN format or convert it into JGP.

However, I think you should consider downloading following apps: Fotor or Canvas. They are easy to use and the finished product has a very professionel look.

You can find them online or in the Apple App Store.

Example Fotor: choose a layout, drag and drop the photos you want combine, when it gets automatically aligns and adjusts the images, so fit the layout.

Example Canva: choose a preset grid or collage template, select images, then position them inside the frames and done.

Have a nice day

The app automatically sort the photos, but if you have created a new album, when you are also able to sort and reorganize the photos.

1: tap on photo

2: tap on album

3: tap on select

4: Scroll through the photos until you find the picture that you want to move or rearrange

5: Tap and hold your finger down on the picture, but do NOT tap the red delete button

6: With your finger drag and drop the picture in its new position

7: When you are done rearranging the photos, tap done
