Secure Notes missing from Keychain Access after Migration Assistant from Sonoma to Sequoia

I just upgraded to a M4 MacBook pro, and used Migration assistant to move everything over (from a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro running Sonoma)

However, it seems like my Secure Notes are missing from the Keychain Access app.

I still have my old MacBook, so I'm sure I can find them on the old computer, but I'm wondering if there's a way to transfer them over?

Here's what I'm seeing:

Old MacBook Pro:

New M4 MacBook Pro:

On the old mac, my keychain is 3.6MB, and if I add a new secure note to it, the file's modified Date immediately updates, suggesting this is where Secure Notes are stored:

~/Libary/Keychains/login.keydchain.db

On the new mac, the keychain is 151KB.

As noted by others, the ability to create Secure notes has been removed in Sequoia:

Sonoma:

Sonoma:

Questions:

  1. can I import the old Secure Notes into my Sequoia keychain, so at least I can have them in a read-only format?
  2. If not, what do you recommend?

I believe I figured out what happened:

  • when I did Migration Assistant, it asked me to set a password for my Admin account
  • I changed the password, thinking "probably a good time for an updated password"

This seemed to have the result of copying over my keychain, but renaming it, and creating a new keychain.

So I ended up with this inside ~/Library/Keychains:

login.keychain-db
login_renamed_2.keychain.db

All of my data was in the "renamed" keychain.

Solution:

  • rename login.keychain-db to "login_BAD.keychain-db"
  • rename login_renamed_2.keychain-db to login.keychain-db

Reboot
