Charging Problem with new Apple Pencil 2

Problem with apple pencil 2. I have 2 new 11" apple ipad air M2s and two new apple pencil 2s. All were purchased on November 23, 2024 at Best Buy. Both are exhibiting the same problems:

1. new apple pencil 2 is attached to new apple ipad.

2. The pencil is connected through bluetooth.

3. The pencil shows up in the pencil control panel.

4. The state of charge will show for a short time.

5. It NEVER shows that the pencil is charging unless the pencil is physically attached to the ipad with the charging cable that came with the new ipad.

6. I can charge the pencil using the charging cable attached to either the ipad or a charger.

There are no cases for either ipad.

I have tried:

1. removing the pencil from the side of the ipad. turning off bluetooth, and restarting the ipad. turning bluetooth back on and attaching the pencil to the side of the ipad. the pencil will not be recognized until I connect the pencil to the ipad using the charging cable. once done, the pencil is immediately recongnized and will begin charging.

2. if I then remove the cable and attach the pencil to the side of the ipad, the pencil will be recognized both in the bluetooth control panel and in the apple pencil control panel. the pencil control panel will show the pencil and the percent of charge. the panel will not show that the pencil is charging. after a few minutes the charge percentage will stop showing and the pencil will show as not connected in the bluetooth control panel.

3. if I remove the pencil from the side of the ipad, it will show as connected in the bluetooth control panel.

4. if I leave the pencil connected for an extended period of time, several hours to overnight, no charging of the pencil takes place. it makes no difference if the ipad is charging or not.

Both ipads and both pencils exhibit the same behavior.

As described, you don't have a second generation Apple Pencil. This Pencil has no means by which to connect a charging cable.

Instead, you will have USB-C Pencil. While this Pencil can be magnetically attached to your iPad, this Pencil can only be charged and paired using a USB-C charging cable:
