How to optimise battery life on iPhone 16 Pro Max

Hello !!

I experienced a battery draining during the standby mode on my new iPhone 16 pro max with ios 18.1.1 it drains about 1-2 % per hour even i turned off the apps on back ground , push notifications and location services , my phone couldn’t exceed 8 hours at the normal use , also i noticed that when I limit the battery charging to 90% the number is exceeding 90% when I restart the phone , is all of that considered as a problem? And if it is , is there a fix for all of that ?

Thank you for helping

8-16% energy loss over 8 hours is about normal. And there are things that use energy that you can’t control; in your situation the heaviest use is maintaining the connection to the cellular network, which the phone “checks into” every few minutes. If you have a weak signal or one that periodically drops out your energy drain will be MUCH more that you have observed. But even with a strong signal it will use energy. There are also app data updates for all of the apps that maintain near real time info, like weather. When the phone is not plugged in Wi-Fi is turned off, so all data goes over the cellular network.

Best practice is to charge your iPhone overnight every night, and also enable automatic backups, which happen when the iPhone is connected to power and the screen is locked.

Since you mentioned Background App Refresh, it is confusing, and Apple doesn’t explain it well. To start with, most apps on iOS devices are “event driven”. That means that something happens that is of “interest” to an app, and the app runs to deal with the event. Examples: A mail message arrives, so the Mail app runs to slurp it up. Likewise if a text message arrives; the Messages app runs to add it to the message list. A weather update arrives, so the Weather app runs briefly to add the latest information to the weather app. The same idea for the Stocks app, Find My, Apple News, dedicated news media apps, Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc. None of these are “notifications" In addition, Notifications that you have enabled also cause apps to run to process the Notification, so you know, for example, that a new text message has arrived.

All of these examples are apps that respond to an “event” that affects the app’s content. NONE of these "event-driven" apps are involved with Background App Refresh; they actually aren’t background processes at all, the are brief executions of the app in foreground behind the screen (if you are watching when an event arrives you will actually see the screen respond briefly). Background App Processing is used by apps that create their own events; for example, the Photos app periodically organizes the images in your photo library into automatically generated albums. This was not caused by any external event; the app just “decided” that it was a good time to organize albums. Or the Messages app takes time to “clean up” the message database. So it is only apps that decide, on their own to do some “work” that use Background App Refresh. Very few apps actually take advantage of this feature that was added several years ago. If you turn off Background App Refresh the apps that use it won’t do their “housekeeping” until you open the app, which may slow down your access to the app.

If you turn it off it will save some energy, but that energy will be used later when you open the app. So there is only minimal benefit to turning it off.

Excellent explanation by Lawrence Finch about the background processes that run on your iPhone. Many third party Social Media apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram consume dramatically more energy on these processes. If you have any of those, it is worth removing them just to compare the results of your battery usage. You can always install them again if you want.

I also agree that the best charging practice is to just use the Optimized Charging setting to let the phone learn your charging habits and charge it every night, all night long. Once it learns your habits, it will charge to 80% until just before you normally wake up and then will charge to 100% to be ready for use.
