Do I have a Generation 1 or 2 mailbox?

My personal domain's web hosting was recently moved to another provider (123 Reg). With that domain, I can set up email accounts for my family (which I already have and those were also migrated over). Normally I use the provided "WebMail" web client to access my email, but I was hoping to add it to my mac Mail client. The following part of the instructions are confusing:

Several new fields will now appear below. Simply enter the following details:

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.secureserver.net (Generation 2 mailboxes only) OR imap.123-reg.co.uk (Generation 1 mailboxes only)
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtpout.secureserver.net (Generation 2 mailboxes only) OR smtp.123-reg.co.uk (Generation 1 mailboxes only)

Once done, click Sign In to continue.

How do I know if I need to use Generation 1 or 2? I've actually tried both and I can't get either one to work. I've opened a support ticket with them but I would like to know about the "generation" settings for my mac. Any help on that would be appriciated.

I entered the following info and clicked "Next"

I then saw that a new account was added along with my iCloud and Gmail accounts. I then got a popup asking for my password (I already entered the password on the initial dialog) and I typed it and clicked OK.

You can see the error in the dialog.

Alternately, if you use the following Apple support site, and enter your 123 Reg email address, does it provide you with what settings are appropriate? Ref: Mail Settings Lookup - Apple Support

For reference, the Mac Mail app is designed to work seamlessly with generation 2 mailboxes.

I'll try the Mail Settings Lookup link and see what I find. So I should maybe try the Generateion 2 server names?

123 Reg also offers another way to set things up. I was trying the manual option. I might give that a try as well.

If you have a Generation 2 mailbox, you can add your mailbox to your Apple Mail by downloading the email configuration to your client. Simply follow the steps outlined below to get started:
