Translate App - Language Auto-Detection for Camera

I'm a little confused as to whether the iOS Translate app's camera feature is meant to have auto-detection, and if not, why not? For example: I bought some steam eye masks from an Asian market near me last week, and decided to use the Translate camera to read the instructions on the back. The app's base translation language for me is French, but I'm not sure why it doesn't switch when I take a photo of the packaging. It clearly detects the characters of the language yet says "detected as French" and spits the same characters back at me as the "translation" to English. It seems as though I'd have to manually enter the language of origin to get a translation in English, but what if I don't know what language it is I want to have translated?? And since it is auto-detecting the characters, why not just auto-switch to that language? Thank you!
