Card Ended Up in Scammer's Device?

I have actually never used Apple Pay, but I put a debit card in to "try out" because it seemed more secure than carrying my card around. I live in Mexico. Last night, two Chinese scammers (I called the store and talked to the clerk who had handled the transaction and she provided a description of them.) - tried to use Apple Pay with my card details to buy a $200.00 gift card. Fortunately, there wasn't enough money to complete the transaction. They kept trying but it kept getting declined - at the same time, both were talking on their iPods and kept telling someone it was declined.

Fortunately, WISE let me know a transaction had been declined. I froze the card, filed a report with them and deleted it from Apple Pay.

What I would like to understand is how my card details were entered on to another device's Apple Pay wallet? The fraud attempt was made in another country and my card was thousands of miles away. Right now, Apple Pay is not feeling very secure if they were somehow able to load my card details in to from thousands of miles away and no physical card.

When a card is added to your Wallet, it is not Apple that approves it, the information from the device is sent to your bank and they are the ones that approve whether the card can be added to the Wallet of that device. The scammers did not get your card details from your Wallet app when you added the card, they most likely got it by you using the physical card in a terminal that had a skimmer/shimmer installed.

Interesting because I am always on the lookout for skimmers since I live in Mexico and I used to work in cybersecurity! I don't go to ATMs other than bank ATMs - ever. No gas station use at all. I have a list of every location here that the card has been used. I did use it once for Amazon Mexico - and have heard of others having problems with new cards being compromised when they've only been used at Amazon.com.mx. But, I would think that Amazon would quash that pretty quickly.

I've filed a report with Wise and the card is frozen as they investigate. Annoying thing is - because my U.S. bank didn't realize I was using a VPN (although they know I am traveling), they have invalidated THAT card and it has to be manually "reactivated" every week while a new card is sent....and now I need TWO new cards and it will take weeks for them to arrive here. Sigh. PITA.

I read that yesterday...thanks for the link - I reviewed it again. So - given the scenario you've proposed - a skimmer...I am happy to have used Wise. They are very proactive about letting me know when a transaction has occurred - either legit or not. I'm not sure the bank would have caught it - if there had been sufficient money in the account - regardless.

I think I understand what's gone on - just beyond annoying. I truly wish for a particularly dark corner of **** for the people who do this kind of thing!!!

Thanks for your help - your engagement is appreciated.

You’re welcome. Jim is more experienced in social engineering and scam websites etc. I’d dare call him one of the experts in the community. I’m more the technology guy. Between us and ½ a dozen or more regulars can at least explain the questions to ask your bank etc.

It sounds like you’re understanding what probably expired. We’re always happy to answer any questions.
