Cannot revert Macintosh HD icon to original

Have you tried, selecting the drive, pressing command+i, clicking on the icon in the Get Info window and pressing Delete?

Could be a glitch. Create a new account with admin privileges and try to alter the icon from that account. If it works there must be something goin on in your main account.

You could try pasting in the Mac mini icon into the get info window of the drive. If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

there is a default internal.icns located there....

FWIW, I used the image I posted to change my M3 iMac's drive icon to the Mac Mini. Not sure why it wouldn't work for you. I just dragged the png into the Macintosh HD Get Info window.

Typically if you highlight the drive icon in the Get Info pane—Command Z seems to restore the default.
