Issues setting up old iPhone 6 for my kid

I created an Apple ID for my child and tried to set up an old iPhone 6 to let them just play around with. In setting it up, it has my iCloud information, but it has their Apple ID for iTunes and App Store and won’t let me change the Apple ID to theirs completely. Now they are getting my texts on their phone. How can I fix this?

iPhone 6, iOS 12

It sounds like the phone itself is signed into your account and your child's account is only signed in the App and iTunes Stores area. Sign out of the phone, wipe it, and set it up properly for your child.
