Time Machine backup during Sleep

If I'm running a Time Machine backup to an external drive, will the backup continue if

a) the Mac goes to sleep?

b) I close the lid of a laptop (MacBook Air) while the backup is in process?

Mac Studio M2 Max; Sequoia 15.1.1

MacBook Air M1 2020; Sonoma 14.6.1

Mac Studio, macOS 15.1

So both a) and b) above pause the backup?

Then when the computer wakes, the backup should resume? Will it resume automatically, or do I have to somehow get it going again?

Is there a way to prevent the computer from sleeping while the backup is in process? Does "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off" accomplish that?

Thanks for any additional info. My desktop Studio has no trouble completing backups when the computer is asleep, but the MacBook Air is not getting a backup to finish, and it seems that starting a backup to run overnight isn't going to work unless I turn off putting it to sleep.
