OMNY- NYC Subway - “ride limit exceeded” with Apple Pay?

When tapping the OMNY system twice with my iPhone 14 to allow a second traveler, I get the second ride rejected. “Ride limit exceeded.”


This has happened twice now in the last week. From what I’ve read, OMNY allows 4 taps at the same station. So it should work.


But I see that Apple Pay may be the problem. Does it have a time limit that prevents 2 or more taps within a short time frame? If this is the case, is there any over ride?


Any insight would be appreciated.

This is the same for my wife and I. We are both using apply pay, with the Apple Card as default card and express transit turned on. Note that this is not a shared Apple Card, my wife and I each signed up for our own.


We used to be able to swipe for our kids. I would swipe each kid multiple times, then swipe for ourselves. Sometimes I’d do my wife as well if she doesn’t have her phone out. Worked totally fine.


Over the past month or so, this stopped working. No change in phones, no change in card, before and after software updates. MTA just says it should work, no help there. Any other card without apply pay works as MTA says it should. But not apply pay with Apple Card, at least anymore (for the last month).

All credit cards do which helps reduce the incidence of cardholders being accidentally charged twice. It also tries to prevent fraudsters from completing dozens of online transactions all at once.
