Samsung T7 support iPhone 16 pro max recording 120fps 4k log support iOS 18.2

anyone comment on Samsung T7 SSD external drives with updated firmware successfully finding professional reliability recording 4K 120fps log format to these external SSD using iOS 18 through a proper USB-C cable

everything I've found so far has not been definitive to answering the question -- it would be great if someone could answer this who's actually using a T7 or T9 in a heavy workflow where it has to work reliably

my instinct is it has most to do with how many amps the iPhone puts out (2.1 max I recall) -- and how many amps the SSD needs to draw for proper operation -- but I am not sure why so many people seem to be having problems recording to external SSD in this workflow (or why the amps are missing from Samsungs official technical papers)

I have a plethora of SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro SSD (older generation) -- I guess I could reformat one to Fat32 and try -- just looking for what works...

why is my external SSD not available in iPhone 16 pro max camera for external recording

how to reformat external SSD using my iPhone iOS 18

everything worked once I Erased the external SSD in the actual iPhone> Files> Browse> Locations (tap/hold on SSD name in list)> Erase (the process automatically used ExFat) and that just worked

I basically understood the camera settings already

I was previously using macOS Disk Utility> Erase> MS-DOS (FAT) and I think tried ExFAT, but the ProRes option didn't work until erased the SSD using the iPhone procedure described above

I didn't buy a T7 to try out ... I just reformatted a 1000MB/s SanDiskExtreme USB-C and shot about 30 minuets of Apple ProRes 4K 120fps Log in various sized clips -- I got them on a 2017 iMac, in FCP and everything looked as expected in the timeline and preview

I recall the iPhone needs a SSD with at least 440MB/s read/write rating -- I would recommend a SSD rated minimum 1000MB/s (to have a cushion and help with the transfer to an editing machine)

I will credit RICHARDTAYLORTV with the reformatting tip

His Utube Article: Do These 4 Things to Record to an External SSD with your iPhone 16 Pro Max!

This is definitely worth looking up and a short 2.5-minute watch

the mistake I see a lot of camera people making, on GoPro for example, is they record LONG clips with its bells and whistles all turned on until their camera overheats and locks up (or use cheap microSD cards) -- my tip is to shoot short clips like you edit (seldom to you need more than a 30 second clip) -- if you need 15-plus minutes of a talking head, maybe look into a real production camera

though I value using the tools you have at hand -- in filmmaking -- just show me the rules -- so I know how to break them...

i cant recall who was touting this Apple ProRes 4K 120fps log workflow on the iPhone 16, but it piqued my interest and i started looking at the nuts and bolts of using it

of course -- before posting here on the Apple iPhone forum -- i found the power requirements for the Samsung Shield T7 external SSD posted in various sites all using the same quoted material ( i think i found the original source on a samsung forum by a moderator as being 1.1 amps) all the sites quoted that poster's information word for word -- i dont trust their information, seen too many forum posters misinforming -- could find nothing conclusive from official Samsung technical sources

then Google AI Overview writing: "The Samsung Portable SSD T7 requires a minimum of 2.5W (5V/0.5A) of power" -- still not ready to trust AI -- I saw an influencer post the T7 drives require 4.1 watts

a lot of smoke and mirrors for anyone trying to record ProRes 120fps 4K log on their iPhone -- it seems most of the people on youtube who claimed it worked admitted to having problems keeping it reliable (or believable)

then you have all the influencer's complicated rigs with USB hubs for attaching external battery and external SSD (to name two) and i cant see how this rigs are usable in anything much beyond conversation

i think we would be stuck waiting for SSD firmware updates (or next-gen SSDs) to resolve the issues -- some SSD manufactures are a brick wall on their support for running their firmware updates from macOS

i am less interested in this the more time i spend trying to wrap my pea brain around it

but ideally -- you would plug the SSD into the iPhone and start recording without issues -- or it is not viable -- not sure that is happening...

I use the T7 but not for the needs you have. You would do a lot better posting this on the T7 forums if you haven’t already. You have to also keep in mind that none of your comments are being seen by Apple (I mention this because of statements where you seemed to be addressing Apple such as “though I value using the tools you have at hand…”) so if you want to say anything that you are hoping Apple will actually see you will need to do so by submitting feedback.

WITH RESPECT: I believe Apple does read and participate in their forums -- officially, unofficially or anonymously -- they would be silly to ignore the heartbeat of their products

but some Adobe forum participants echo the same comments -- yet I've had many forum conservations with Adobe employees and engineers over the decades

the feedback feature you mention is also a useful tool -- if a person wants to spend that time -- I choose not to

but that CAMERA CONTROL feature on my 16 Pro Max -- now there is a conversation I would love to have with the design team (I turn off all the fancy stuff but leave the Camera Control button on for the double-press shortcut to the camera -- that is very useful)

specifically, the issue is the slow deliberate press that jumps the still to a video

if there is a Zen to the archer's draw -- then it's the shutter press to the still photographer

I've shot millions of still photos over the past 40 years as a full-time professional photographer -- and the most successful shutter release is a slow, steady press that surprises you when it clicks

the only surprise I get from using my finger skill with the CC release is an unwanted jump to another camera mode (and I miss my shot) -- I find myself trying to jab my finger down to beat the mode jump...

NOT COOL

Then again, my 13 Pro Max camera introduced me to taking hand-held 6-second exposures in the dark and having my scene captured all lit up and sharp

NOW THAT'S GENIUS!

I haven't found a way to disable the CC's mode change when pressing the CC button a split second too long -- and keep the CC's button 2x-press open camera feature active -- I did disable CC's other features like exposure, depth, zoom, styles, tone because I found them problematic by design and distracting to the task

interesting policy you say -- I've had sr advisors find and review my Apple forum posts during support calls as recently as three months ago on this post, for example (new iPhone 16 pro Max will not mount macOS -- cannot access it to Restore from my BackUps) -- I know he was reading it from the forum because he was reading parts back to me -- the bug was apparently news to him and he seemed very interested in what I was telling him

but that type of policy would explain a lot ... thinking back on some of the nonsensical responses I've gotten from advisors

yes, I did over several months

are you saying there are settings in iOS 18.2 Accessibility on 16ProMax that will allow me 1) use 2x press to open camera from Lock screen, and 2) disable the mode change jump (I am talking about) if I press the Camera Control side button to release the camera shutter and take the photo?

iPhone 18.2> Settings> Accessibility> Camera Control

if you say it's possible -- I'm just missing something -- I can post my Settings> Camera screenshots

it would be much appreciated if you can point out the setting to my goal...

Dec 23, 2024 3:25 PM in response to -g

iPhone 18.2> Settings> Accessibility> Camera Control

Goal: how to disable the camera control shutter button from jumping modes (from still photo to video for example) if user takes a fraction of a second too long pressing camera control button to take a still photo (previously described above)

advice received to use Accessibility in Settings app was not a fix or solution to that goal

helper either didn't understand the question or didn't test their advice out prior to sending me down that false trail

  1. This is a user to user support community. The first statement in the fine print for the community states: “This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only”. Under General for the Apple Support Communities Use Agreement point 7 states: Apple may respond to questions but does not formally provide technical support on the Site.

I never said Apple ignores anything. I did however advise you that if you wanted Apple to actually see your comments that are intended for them that you would need to submit it in the appropriate manner (rather than hoping someone from Apple stumbles across your comments and reads within it the direct message you wanted them to see and address). One of those appropriate manners would be by submitting feedback through the relevant form Product Feedback - Apple . Other options to ensure someone from Apple (not a moderator for the user to user support community but someone that is actually employed in their technical support departments and can actually formally provide technical support which is not done by Apple in this community as their terms of use states) would be contacting Apple via one of the manners shown on the following link Official Apple Support. This would include calling in or using the Support App.

You mentioned the feedback feature was a useful tool if someone wanted to spend that time and you didn’t want to. That’s absolutely your right and choice but it was mentioned to you because if you truly wanted it addressed by Apple and wanted an answer or help on that specific issue in a much more official way then going that route or any of the other official support methods would be the best way to do so and would likely garner you a faster response/solution than us users that may suggest something but does not end up actually giving you the solution you were seeking (which appears to have already happened as you stated “helper either didn't understand the question or didn't test their advice out prior to sending me down that false trail”). Unfortunately, as well meaning as every fellow user that attempts to help may be it is always highly likely you will deal with a lot of trial and error situations unless the answer or fix has been definitively found.

At any rate, I hope you are able to find the answers you are looking for.

I understand your question perfectly. I don’t believe you understood what >change the behavior of Camera Control< means. My suggestion will result in the behavior of the control being modified and changed from default settings.

My suggestion was to explore the controls that are available. Changing the amount of pressure may help with some of the challenges you face. Modifying the speed at which the button is pressed may help as well. Gestures is another possibility that may assist. Combined you can certainly modify the behavior, as I stated.

Until you’ve explored what’s available, it’s difficult to say what may or may not be a workaround until a more permanent solution is available, if ever. It could certainly be years before Apple changes Camera Control behaviors.
