ChatGPT Login Error on macOS Sequoia 15.2

After I logged in my chatgpt account, this error always showed up, no matter I try to log in with apple account or google account. The version of macOS is Sequoia 15.2. The mbp is bought from HK with M4 pro chip. The regions of iCloud id and system setting are both US. I currently stay in Mainland China, and my vpn works fine. Can anyone tells me what happened?

I have mbp m3 on Sequoia 15.2 and I was having the same issue and it was driving me mad but I got it working and I thought I would share hoping it helps somebody.

Things I tried (that did not help):

  • Changing to different default browser
  • Using 2FA vs disabled 2FA
  • Clearing browser cache
  • From ChatGPT, force logout all sessions

I live in US. I have chatgpt plus account and have no issue ever logging in via any browser with the macos desktop app. Here is what I noticed. When I go to my MacOs settings and look at Use ChatGPT and enable that and then try to "sign in" it opens up a private browser session. If your default web browser is set to Safari, it will open that up so you can log into your ChatGPT account. What I also noticed is that you can open up a developer javascript console and if your fast, I could see an error message when I logged in. The message I saw was "Fetch API cannot load https://chatgpt.com/ces/v1/b due to access control checks."

At this point I'm thinking the domain I'm currently on does not allow CORS. VPN makes no sense. I live in US and have no issues with logging in via browser or desktop app. But I tried VPN to my closest city. That is what worked.

TLDR; try a vpn. Even if you're in the US.

Good luck.

I've figured it out; at least for my use case.

I had the same issue; trying to sign into ChatGPT with an existing account would always net me a "Sign in Failed" error.

Reading the top reply; I tried to turn VPN on. No luck

I had tested if I was able to log into ChatGPT normally in a Safari session (separate from Settings Logon pane)

I was able to log in all good.

Then I realized I had AdGuard which I know sometimes has a DNS or HTTPS filtering setting turned on.

Disabling Adguard and trying to sign in again worked for me.

Obviously if you don't have AdGuard this doesn't apply to you
