I updated my iphone to latest operating system (mistake!). It states that i have 17 unread emails, but when I look it have 80 unread emails. Why does Apple lie to me?

I found the dots on the Inbox page. Wish I had known because apple support had me delete and add my account back. Several steps with no success. I went back and did as you suggested and it worked. I let apple support know so they won't steer the next person wrong!!
With the latest update 18.2 you have click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and change it from Categories to Lost View. It will then show the correct unread number.
I don't see the three dots. Where are they located? Are you in Gmail?
Does anyone know how to fix this? I look at my phone and I have zero new emails (based on the home screen), when I open email I have 50!
