Silent mode Emergency Bypass for my iPhone SE.

I have an iPhone SE (gen3) running iOS 18.1.1

I generally have the silent mode switch on the left side pushed down/back - enabling silent mode

but have two contacts with ringer and text tones set with vibration and sounds having emergency bypass enabled.

Texts from one work fine. The other does not work at all... I get the text but there is no sound, light, or vibration from the phone or watch.

Toggling the emergency bypass did not help.

Deleting the non-functioning contact and recreating it and setting emergency bypass did not help.

The working contact continues to function as expected, but only when silent mode is DISABLED.

This worked LAST WEEK (before updating to iOS 18.x) for both contacts.

What has changed?!?!?!

Elsewhere in these forums I found the following:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings

This got the broken contact to make a noise when SMS received while silent mode is DISABLED only.

This is an improvement but the WHOLE purpose of emergency bypass is to bypass silent mode!

Incongruently, a phone call from the Emergency Bypass contact gets thru silent mode just fine.

I've spent hours trying to figure this out when it used to 'just work'.

Does anyone else have this issue?

You should be using Do Not Disturb rather than the Mute switch for the situation you describe:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, and even create new, custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with a quick tap on the Control Center DND button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.
