How to set Default Card in Apple Wallet?

I have 4 payment cards in my Apple Wallet, a charge card, two credit cards and a debit card. The default card was my charge card. Today I used Apple Pay to make a payment to my energy supplier expecting that the default card - the charge card - would be charged but no the energy supplier managed to select my debit card instead. Within a second my debit card was charged - no opportunity to stop it.

How can this be allowed to happen? I would have thought if my energy supplier did not accept my charge card I would be asked to choose another card.

Is this a glitch in the programming or a loophole nobody’s thought about or what? If this is a legitimate way of using Apple wallet then it ought to be publicised more or have I missed it? (User error 🤔😂)

Anyone got a clue?

Before I do that I thought I’d try this again, so I opened my energy suppliers app, chose to make an additional payment using Apple Pay, I’d already set my default card to AMEX.

I took things very slowly and noticed that the energy suppliers app had selected my debit card from Apple Wallet again, not my default card. My two credit cards were there as an option.

Last time I must have double clicked without realising that my debit card had been selected so my fault for missing that.

My original thought is correct - because my energy supplier does not accept AMEX their app selected an alternative card to the default card in Apple wallet which they do accept.

I didn’t know they could do that but they can.

They can’t do that. You must select each payment method and each payment attempt requires Face ID to initiate. When you attempt another transaction, iPhone must create another payment token. Each token contains specific information about the transaction and payment method. Token is only created after Face ID initiates the transaction.

I suspect if Apple Pay fails, energy supplier moves to next payment method they have on record for you.

I’ve explained how the Wallet works and how Apple Pay works. Apple does not add the card to Apple Wallet. Only the issuing bank has the ability to create a token and approve adding it to the Wallet.

The Wallet cannot automatically choose a different payment method. Face ID must be used to activate Apple Pay for each payment attempt.

The scenario you describe cannot happen. Have you discussed this with the merchant? If so, what did they say?

Yes I pay by monthly direct debit but from a different current account (my monthly bills account) than the debit card which was used, that was my regular current account.

This was a one off extra payment to keep me in credit during the winter months. The debit card for my monthly bills current account is not registered in apple wallet.

My thoughts are that because credit and charge cards incur a small percentage charge which goes to the card issuer but debit cards don’t, my energy supplier has managed to find out which cards are in my Apple wallet and chose the one which they preferred to get the maximum amount of money. Do that over tens of thousands of accounts and it adds up to a tidy sum.

Yes it’s an odd one because they used a debit card in Apple Pay which is not attached to any account I have with them.

I simply chose an option on their app to make an extra payment, the options were Apple Pay, Google Pay or you entered debit or credit card details manually in the usual way, I chose Apple Pay as it was the quickest option - used Face ID and double click to pay - I was amazed it didn’t choose my default card - AMEX by the way which I use for fuel and travel. However AMEX was not an option if I chose to enter card details manually, if the energy supplier don’t accept AMEX that’s fair enough, that’s why I wondered why Apple Pay picked a debit card instead without any notification.

I reckon I should have changed my default card back to my visa credit card before using Apple Pay. My visa credit card is my usual default card. Lesson learnt.

Thats what baffles me - yes I agree the default card normally does appear at the top of the but out of four possible cards - well three if you don’t count the default card because the supplier doesn’t accept it - in this case as I double clicked and looked at the phone it went straight to the debit card immediately. I have never used my debit card as the default card, it’s usually my visa credit card, the other credit card being a Mastercard which brings me back to my original point - can an organisation see which cards are in my wallet and select the one they want to charge and not the default card.

For me I’m fortunate that it has not seriously affected me financially and I can prevent a recurrence quite easily but being interested in the technology I’m wondering if it’s a glitch in the system which nobody’s noticed.
