I have malware that gives me popups on Safari

So, I accidentally clicked on what must've been a malicious ad. Every 5 minutes or so, I get a notification from Safari in the top right of my screen being like "You have 5 viruses" or "Clean your computer" (Im well aware these notifications are scams and that clicking on them will send me to a scam site.) Thankfully, the notification is something I can easily ignore, as it disappears after a couple seconds and can be manually closed, but I know that whatever got put on my mac book is probably stealing my data or something like that. I've tried clearing my search history and quitting/restarting Safari, but the notification still shows up. Anyone know what I should do? Im thinking I might wipe my mac book by deleting the account and recreating another since I don't really have any valuable information on here, but I'd prefer to do something less drastic before getting to that.

(For anyone wondering how I got into this situation, I was looking for wallpapers and clicked on one of those generic wallpaper sites because I found a good image and wanted a higher quality version. Im normally more resistant to clicking on malevolent ads, but it was one of those "Confirm your not a robot" checkboxes & it filled my entire screen, and I assumed it must've been legit in the moment. After clicking it, the site spammed me with those mcafee "Anti-malware" things so I closed the tab because at that point i knew it was a scam site. I hoped I hadn't gotten anything bad on my computer, but since I'm getting the little notification I mentioned earlier, it's obvious that I did.)
