Why does it take my iMac so long to startup?

It is taking more than 30 minutes to load when the white apple appears on the black screen with the status loading bar showing. I installed the updates recommended and have seen no change. I read the steps for a laptop but I don’t know if those would work for a desktop computer.

That is a classic sign of a failing HD. Before you do ANYTHING backup the computer to safeguard your data. Use Time Machine to backup or create a bootable clone using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.

After you have backed up then download the trial copy of DriveDX and test the internal HD, if there are ANY errors, that confirms my hunch that the internal drive is failing.
