When sendingng a text message to a contact with multiple phone numbers how do I make sure it picks the correct number?

iOS prioritizes the number used in the most recent communication. When replying to a message, it automatically selects the number from which the message was received.
For new messages, iOS requires manual selection of the desired number from the contact's multiple options.
