FWIW, a MacBook Air (13-inch, M3, 2024), ships with macOS 14.3 (Sonoma). It was available starting in in March, Sequoia wasn't released until September.
What follows doesn’t answer your “Why” in your question, which may have been answered elsewhere.
It does answer the exact macOS version installed on the computer when it was new.
It also lists all subsequent updates and upgrades, including the current macOS version installed
Finder >> Go > > Utilities << System Information
Scroll down on left panel to >> " Installations ".
In the Header , click on >> Software Name
The scroll down on the Right Panel until you see macOS
Check under the header of “ Install Date “
In this example below, macOS 15.0 Sequoia was Originally installed on 2024-09-03
I would follow the advise from @stedman1 - first
Sometimes, in our hast we read things incorrectly ?
Sonoma and Sequoia may look similar ?
Though, judging from your user by-line " MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.2 "
It would appear, the computer is registered as having macOS 15.2 Sequoia
Could you post a screenshot of the screen showing when clicking on the Apple Logo and selecting “About this Mac”.? Please obscure the serial number when posting.
