You don't. If they are purchased from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller, then they are legitimate. If not, then you will have no idea and with the amount of counterfeit accessories found on the internet, it is highly likely that they would be fake as well.

Not only do they counterfeit the AirPods and use similar packaging, they also copy the serial numbers of legitimate devices, so there is no serial number check you can do either.

With fake Airpods you may find:

  • Noise Cancellation does not work or works poorly
  • Poor Audio Quality
  • No AppleCare
  • Poor Range
  • Trouble connecting or maintaining connection to iPhone
  • Find My may not work

In any case, if you have a fake pair of AirPods and you are happy with them, then it really makes no difference to you.

Unfortunately, as you acknowledge, a user can do everything suggested in your post and still end up with fake AirPods. Most users are looking to prove that AirPods purchased from a third party source are legitimate, not that they could be fake, and that simply is not possible.

The only way to know for sure that the AirPods are legitimate is to buy from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller.

It's getting harder to recognize real AirPods from fake ones. Counterfeiters not only copy the serial numbers of legitimate devices but also replace the packaging boxes with authentic-looking ones.

Still, the serial number is the first thing you should check. Your serial number should match the one inside the AirPods charging case.

Here’s where you can find the serial number:

To verify authenticity, check the serial number online here:

Additionally, there are some key details to look for to determine the authenticity of the product, such as fonts, build quality, packaging, etc. While these might seem minor, they can help you figure out whether the AirPods are real or fake. You can check the images below for more guidance.
